Our Legal team come from all walks of law. The one thing they have in common is up-to-the-minute legal know-how and commercial smarts. They use both to protect our business (and our customers).
I work hard and I give a lot, but I also get things back in return. It’s a give and take. Cover-More support their people to do a great job – with flexibility, work/life balance and employee benefits.
Shilu’s passion and drive helped her stand out when she joined Cover-More as a contractor. She was quickly offered a full-time role in customer service, but pursuing her ambitions meant moving from Nepal to Australia and leaving her 10-month-old son behind.
“I loved the environment and what I was doing. My family supported me with my decision and so I came back to Australia to work for Cover-More.”
Her perseverance paid off, and her son soon joined her in Australia. Some 16 years later, Shilu says the move was worth it, with her career still going from strength to strength.
Taking the lead
After working her way up in customer service, Shilu decided to put her passion for learning to the test at TAFE. She studied for her certification 4 in accounting and finance and followed it up with a diploma. And then, when she wanted to put her new skills to use in our finance team, she put her hand up and asked. We were happy to oblige.
“After my qualifications, I requested to work in the finance department one day a week, which I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to do.
“This turned into a full-time role. At first I was given straight enquiries, which then turned into the accounts receivable role I’m in now. I’ve worked across accounts receivable for partners like Flight Centre and Helloworld. And my role has continued to grow and develop: I now oversee our World Travel Protection, Cover-More Australia and Cover-More NZ portfolios as Accounts Receivable Specialist , and support our team in the Philippines.”
The drive to do more
Shilu says she is still eager to learn more, and as a self-described people person, she holds ambitions to one day lead a team of her own.
“Coming from a different background and a different culture, Cover-More has mentored me and given me a lot of support. I’ve learned a lot in this company – professionally and personally.
“I think I can adapt to any environment and in lots of situations now. I’ve grown so much since
I joined 16 years ago. I’m proud to be a part of Cover-More.”
